Cape McLear, at the southern end of Lake Malawi, was once an early Church of Scotland mission. However the missionaries were driven away by malaria when their doctor, Dr Black died in 1877. By the 1950s Short Sunderland flying boats regularly landed on the huge freshwater lake and the Cape McLear hotel was a popular holiday resort. Now in ruins the hotel is in the National Reserve. The waters around the cape was one of the first fresh water nature reserve protecting many unique species of fish and other aquatic life. It is now a World Heritage Site. This area is popular with back packers.
