The sculpture of the twelfth century, like the architecture of thesame period, is marked by a charac-teristic peculiarity, in that it was anart at once very ancient and verynovel, an art of primitives strugglingv.-ith material as yet unsubdued, yet adecadent art, in which antiquatedforms and superannuated customs stillsurvived. It combines a strangerudeness with subtle refinements. Itis awkward and contorted, becausefor the most part the twelfth centurysculptors simplv transposed into reliefwhat Byzantine artists had designedfor painting.
