The Jewry Wall Museum in Leicester is well worth a visit if you are interested in Leicester's Roman history. Leicester or Ratae Corieltauvorum was a town in the Roman province of Britannia. Located at a crossing of the River Soar it was on the 1st century AD border of the empire which ran from Exeter to Lincoln - the Fosse Way linking the two. It grew into a more important town in the 2nd century AD as the Romans expanded further north. The Jewry Wall is one of the largest standing Roman structures remaining in England. It is the outer wall of the public baths with the pathways in front outlining the different rooms in the baths. The Anglo-Saxon St Nicholas' Church behind the wall incorporates substantial re-used Roman building materials.
